 Problem/Inquiry

The general contractor was working on a project that involved a large amount of mezzanine square footage and needed a contractor that could provide fully turnkey design, engineering, and installation services.

 

 Solution

Through a combination of conference calls and on site visits, we worked with the GC to design the systems to best work within their layouts. Location of columns and cross braces were the most important factors. There were two design aspects that were unique to this project. First, in the corner of one of the rooms where a mezzanine was going, there is a bathroom. We could not have a column in the bathroom for obvious reasons. After discussing a few ideas, it was determined that the best way to proceed was for our beam to go through the wall and the column would be placed in the next room. Second, due to the location of a door in relation to one of our staircases, we designed a different support system for that staircase so travel through the door would not be affected and code would be met.

After confirming design, we performed all engineering services to make sure that the steel would sufficiently support the operations on each of the mezzanines. From there, we worked with the GC and other subcontractors to successfully receive the materials on site and professionally install the systems. In order to maintain the GC’s schedule, we installed roughly 12,000 SF of mezzanine area in just under 3 weeks.
