Our customer is a leading general contractor on the west coast that delivers fully turnkey projects to clients in many different industries. Problem/Inquiry
Our customer’s client, The Aerospace Corporation, was looking to change the layout of a portion of their facility. As a part of that project, they needed a mezzanine for both storage and office space. Working in a confined space, a mezzanine needed to be designed and engineered to maximize the usability of the space below, while supporting both general storage and office space above.
Solution
Mezzanine Distributors worked together with the general contractor’s team that included project managers, architects, engineers, and the end client to design a system that would do just that - support storage and office space up top, while maximizing usability below the mezzanine. In a high seismic area like California, this can be quite a challenge.
The Mezzanine Distributors team designed and engineered a completely custom system that included the following:
- Custom column and bracing placement to avoid customer doors, walkways, and equipment
- Holes in beams for sprinkler pipe to run through
- A portion of the office mezzanine was cantilevered up to 4.5’ due to concrete footers being too close to a piece of existing equipment in the end client’s facility
- The structure was precisely designed to fit in between multiple walls and large production equipment while maintaining sufficient distance from load-bearing building walls to satisfy permitting requirements
- Two different style staircases - straight and U-shaped
- Countersunk column baseplates to allow for maximum usability below the mezzanine
- Mezzanine gate to allow for pallets to be loaded onto the storage portion of the mezzanine
- ¾” Tongue and groove resin board flooring as a finished floor
- Custom wire mesh handrail and insert panels
- Custom yellow and blue colors
Some projects prove to be fairly straightforward in the quest to achieve more usable space in a facility. This project was anything but straightforward, but the Mezzanine Distributors team, along with their trusted partners, provided the solution that the customer needed.
